Microdermabrasion FAQs

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive cosmetic procedure for your skin. A skin care specialist removes the top layer of your skin with a small, minimally abrasive device, gently exfoliating to improve the evenness, texture, and appearance of your skin.

This procedure is used to treat uneven skin, discoloration, sun damage, or stretch marks, and is safe for a person with any skin color.

What results can I expect?

Microdermabrasion treatments remove the thicker, uneven outer layer of skin, rejuvenating the skin and providing many benefits. It can provide some or all of the following results:

  • Exfoliated skin, resulting in smoother, refreshed appearance
  • Reduced size of enlarged pores
  • Improved appearance of age spots
  • Improved appearance of hyperpigmentation (discolored or darker areas)
  • Treated acne, blackheads, and the scars left by acne
  • Lessened appearance of stretch marks
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles

Collagen is a protein in your skin that makes skin appear smooth. As we age, collagen production declines, which causes loose, wrinkled skin. Microdermabrasion also helps to thicken your collagen, which results in a more youthful complexion.

When will I see results from microdermabrasion?

Most patients need a series of treatments to see the best results. We may treat a patient weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. After a series of treatments, patients usually notice smoother skin and a more youthful complexion.

How long do the results last?

Your skin will continue to age, which is expected. Because of this, the results tend to be temporary. Protecting your skin from the sun and following your recommended skin-care plan will maintain your results for a longer time. Follow-up treatments can help retain smoother skin and that radiant complexion you desire.

Are there risks?

Discomfort during or following the procedure is possible, but is usually mild and short-lived. This can include redness and slight swelling, which should subside within a few hours. Later, you may find that your skin is flaky and/or dry for a few days, similar to a mild sunburn.

It is possible for bruising to occur from the suction and may last several days.

It is also important to know that your skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure. Be sure to use sunscreen following any microdermabrasion session.
